UCU Canons suffered a 57–72 defeat to record champions City Oilers as the first round of the 2026 National Basketball League season wrapped up on Sunday, April 12, at YMCA Wandegeya.
The much-anticipated fixture had initially been scheduled for March 20 but was postponed due to the Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
UCU made an impressive start, taking control of the opening quarter with a 16–11 lead, thanks to disciplined defense and organized offense. However, the Oilers quickly bounced back in the second quarter, outscoring the Mukono-based side 18–12 to edge into a slim halftime advantage.
The third quarter remained tightly contested, ending 17–17, with both teams exchanging baskets and struggling to create a clear gap. UCU stayed within touching distance heading into the final period, keeping hopes alive for a comeback.
However, the fourth quarter proved decisive as City Oilers stepped up their intensity. Dominating 26–12, they pulled away with efficient shooting and strong rebounding to comfortably secure the win.
Joel Kayiira led the Oilers with an outstanding performance, recording 19 points and 16 rebounds against his former team. Malual Dier added 12 points, while Edgar Munaba and Titus Lual each contributed 11 points.
For UCU, Jimmy Otim stood out with a game-high 20 points, emerging as the only player on his side to reach double figures.
The result leaves UCU with a 6–5 record, placing them seventh on the league table at the close of the first round.
As the second round approaches, the Canons will be looking to regroup and improve their standing, with campus fans hopeful for a stronger push in the remaining fixtures.
