Kyambogo University Secures Shs2.98Bn Road Upgrade Deal to Boost Campus Mobility
Kyambogo University has taken a major step toward improving campus infrastructure after signing a Shs2.98 billion Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NEC Enterprises Ltd to upgrade 1.3 kilometres of internal roads.
The agreement, signed on April 4, 2026, will see key roads at the university’s East End Campus upgraded to bituminous standard. The targeted stretch runs from the Main Roundabout to Kabaka Gate, covering critical routes including UPK Engineering Road, Kisosonkole Road, Mackay Loop 1 and 2, and Mackay Road.
The project, valued at Shs2,978,117,560, is expected to be completed within three months, followed by a 12-month defects liability period to ensure quality and durability.
Under the MoU, NEC Enterprises Ltd will handle comprehensive civil works such as drainage construction, earthworks, asphalt surfacing, culvert installation, road signage, speed humps, thermoplastic markings, and landscaping. The project will also involve relocating essential utilities like power lines, water pipes, and telecommunications, alongside installing service ducts for future infrastructure expansion.
Speaking during the signing, NEC Managing Director Lt Gen James Mugira praised the university for entrusting the company with the project, assuring timely delivery. He emphasized NEC’s strong track record in executing government-backed infrastructure projects without delays often seen with private contractors.
Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaya welcomed the partnership, revealing that the institution conducted thorough due diligence before committing.
“We have confidence that the job will be done well and completed on time,” he noted, adding that this marks the beginning of a broader collaboration that could extend to other projects like the construction of a perimeter wall fence.
For campus students, the development signals a significant upgrade in daily life.
Once completed, the improved road network is expected to ease traffic congestion, enhance drainage, boost pedestrian safety, and improve access to lecture halls, hostels, and administrative offices.
The project positions Kyambogo University among institutions actively investing in modern infrastructure to match the growing demands of student life and academic excellence.
