Gov’t Sponsors Bobi Wine’s Nephew Churchill Ssentamu for Leadership Course in China

Churchill Ssentamu, the 91st Guild President of Makerere University and nephew to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has travelled to China for a government-sponsored leadership and youth development programme.

Ssentamu’s trip has quickly drawn attention among students and political observers, given his rising profile as one of Uganda’s emerging youth leaders both within campus circles and beyond.

Speaking from Beijing, the guild president revealed that the programme is equipping him with practical insights into youth empowerment, leadership development, and entrepreneurship systems that have transformed millions of young people.

“I am in China to study innovative youth development strategies, leadership programs, and entrepreneurship ecosystems that have successfully empowered millions of young people,” Ssentamu said.

He emphasized that China’s rapid progress in vocational training, digital skills, and innovation hubs offers valuable lessons that Uganda can adapt to tackle youth unemployment and prepare for a fast-evolving digital economy.

“China’s rapid progress in areas like vocational training, digital skills, and youth innovation hubs offers valuable lessons for Uganda and Africa,” he added.

Beyond the short course, Ssentamu also represented Makerere University at a high-level strategic meeting in Beijing, held under an existing partnership with Tsinghua University Department of Safety Science.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration in research, innovation, and academic exchange programmes between the two institutions.

“I attended a strategic meeting on behalf of Makerere University to strengthen this partnership and explore bigger opportunities,” he noted.

For many students, the China trip represents more than just academic exposure. It places Ssentamu at the intersection of student leadership, international diplomacy, and youth policy engagement—key areas that could shape his future beyond guild politics.

With his growing public influence and increasing political interest surrounding his name, Ssentamu’s international engagement is expected to further spark debate about his next move in Uganda’s leadership landscape.
